Gout and Heart Disease
Gout and heart disease have similar risk factors. It is quite common for gout to proceed or follow the occurrence of heart disease. One 2001 study reported that disease activity in gout may even contribute to unhealthy cholesterol and lipid levels while other evidence suggests that hyperuricemia may occur as a response to inflammatory damage that occurs with heart disease and may even be protective.
Some other conditions which are associated with long term gout include cataracts and dry eye syndrome.
